One of the most interesting parts for me to create was the “sun,” which appears in the upper right of the painting. This was actually a spin painting that I made using an old-fashioned record player and a vintage vinyl record. The sun also has been enhanced with some gold foil. The central part of the painting is a line that has been cast into the water. I wanted people who are looking at the painting to feel that they are experiencing the joy fishing at the same time as those who are on the boats in the picture. To get this feeling, I actually “cast the paint” and had it land on the canvas, much in the way that a hook lands in the water. So the line is actually being cast from outside the painting, giving the painting more of an “action” feel to it. Because the painting was done over Christmas, the painting was also inspired by the Biblical concept of the Miraculous Draught of Fish. By giving the feeling that the line was coming from outside the painting, I also wanted to convey the idea of spirituality and that there is always something outside of our own world influencing it.

Size: 72x48

<span data-sheets-value='{"1":2,"2":"This is a painting that I created which was inspired by Asian art that I have recently become fascinated with. I worked on this piece as part of a live painting at Toronto's Artist Project. For me I wanted to experiment with a few things. I used a very thick base of paint to give the painting a significant amount of texture. You can see this particularly in the upper part of the canvas. I also wanted the focal point of the painting to be the concept of two forces being applied to the landscape. Visually, the sun and the moon both appear in the picture. But is it an early morning sunrise or late in the evening sunset? I also was thinking about how the moon affects the tide, which is always constantly changing. As a larger idea, I wanted to the piece to represent how there are different forces always influencing us, some being positive and some negative. One other very interesting thing was that when I finished the painting, and was looking at it under a certain light, the texture in the upper left of the canvas looked like an angel floating in the sky; can you see it? The more I thought about it, I also was thinking that perhaps this really was meant to be: perhaps there is a higher power judging our actions and influencing our decisions to do good or bad deeds. One other interesting thing about this painting is that a few weeks after finishing it, I brought it on the set of a TV interview that I was doing. After leaving the set, I received a call from the host of the show who loved the painting. This piece, entitled Samo, is a portrait of Jean-Michel Basquiat, the American neo-expressionist artist who brought the energy of the streets to his art. In this painting, I thought a lot about how an artist makes the transition from being an unknown street artist to emerging artist to "rock star" artist status. While I usually like to show the eyes of my portraits, because I feel that the eyes convey so much about a person's personality and past experiences, I decided to place Basquiat in sunglasses. I did this because I think, in the end, he wanted to be shielded from the public and just enjoy the process of making art. Additionally, I used white accents on the sunglasses to show the presence of Warhol in room influencing Basquiat's thinking. The pink accents also reflect this. I also placed the word "Samo" on the lower right of the painting, because I am sure that, in some way, Basquiat probably wanted to go back to the pure enjoyment that he felt in the street when he started painting. Lastly, I struggled as to whether I should place the © symbol or @ symbol in the painting as the latter might be more in line with what Basquiat might think now, with the influence of Instagram in the art world. I called the piece, The World needs more Canada, because I believe that we live in the best country in the world, and I think that we should set the example of how to live in harmony - with one another, with other countries and with nature. To showcase this concept, I chose to paint the lighthouse that defines a cultural landmark: Peggy's Cove. To me, while we do not have a Statue of Liberty to welcome new immigrants to our country, it is our rugged and stunning geography that embraces them. I decided to depict the scene as a wintery landscape, because this is my favourite season, and because I think that the ability to live in frigid temperatures defines Canadians to others around the world. I wanted to also light the sky in two different ways to showcase harmony: the lighthouse, sunset and orange hues providing hope to people, whereas the left is defined by the moon and relative darkness. True harmony happens when we embrace both. I also chose to paint the bright red sky with linear deeper strokes as a salute to the analytical thinkers who move Canadian society forward in technology and science. The moon scenery is softer and was created by circular strokes, as a nod to the creative people who define our country's arts and culture. In the middle of the sky I decided to blend blues and yellows to create green. This colour was very important because as I was finishing the painting, we heard of the untimely passing of a Canadian icon: Gord Downie. One of the things that I really like about Pollock is that he incorporated his personality and ruggedness into his paintings. He also created a whole new style of painting that didn’t exist before him.

In this painting, I started my first base layer as a series of drips and paint throws to give the painting significant texture. I used a “casting” technique to throw the paint, because I love fishing and this movement simulated casting a rod when I fish at my cottage for bass and pike. After the base dried, I painted with white because I wanted the painting to be somewhat muted to bring out Pollock’s personality and thoughts. While I was creating this piece, I did significant research on the artist himself, both reading articles and watching archived footage of him paint. One thing that I was struck by was the research done by an Australian physicist who works in the area of fractal analysis. This technique analyzes 2 and 3-dimensional works and can determine the degree in which something is ordered or random. The researcher was able to determine that Pollock’s works were actually very ordered in nature and by the end of his career, his work was given a 1.72 rating – which means it is extremely ordered; Pollock wasn’t just throwing paint in an undisciplined fashion. To highlight this concept, I placed the number 1.72 repetitively throughout the painting. In learning more about Pollock, I was also struck by the anxiety that he felt in creating his work and being labeled by Life magazine as, “America’s greatest living painter.” To convey the concept of his mental state, I used blacks and blue hues and also gave him a more subdued expression. While the song's overall sound and melody are very raw, what appeals to me most about it is its lyrics. To me, the song speaks specifically to the loss of ability to express one's point of view. Some of my fondest of his works are movies like The Sting, Butch Cassidy and Cool Hand Luke.

To my generation, Newman may best be known for "The Watch". Specifically, his Rolex Daytona ref. 6239. It was recently sold at auction for $17.8M, being called "the Mona Lisa" of the art world. The timepiece was given to him by his wife in 1968, to help him keep time while he racing. She had it engraved with the simple words “Drive Carefully Me.”

Some 15 years after the gifting of the watch, it changed hands. After the building of a treehouse with his then girlfriend’s father, eighteen-year old James Cox was asked what time it was by Newman. Cox responded that he didn’t know because he didn’t have a watch. Newman, taking the watch off his wrist, stated, “now you do.”

After reflecting on the story of the watch and its cultural significance, I wanted to create a piece that honoured the actor, what he stood for and the timepiece itself.

In the upper left I have created a setting sun. This is a symbol of the fall of the golden age of Hollywood, a time period when many of the greatest cinematic pieces were created. It also signifies transitions. As I was working on the canvas, I was thinking about how Newman was transitioning into his second career, chasing his love of racing over that of acting.

Upon the sun, I placed the iconic Rolex logo to signify the famous tie between the brand and Newman. I also loved the idea that you have to take risk to pursue your passion, but the best way to do so is within the construct of using technology or analysis to control risk. Lastly, I wanted the logo to be over the sun, to appear as a deconstructed timepiece.

In this portrait I want to not only showcase this incredible actor and time period, but I also believe that there is something to learn from the era. We are currently experiencing an environmental catastrophe that will soon become unfixable, and we are at a crossroads similar to the end of the golden age of Hollywood. In this painting, I strived to capture in Newman’s eyes both the urgency and tranquillity that can be associated with changing times.

Drive Carefully Me seems to take on a different meaning as we as a society drive greenhouse gas emitting vehicles towards the end of a time as we currently know it.
