Canada's Poet
Canada's Poet
This is a painting of one of my heros - Gord Downie - the lead singer of the band the Tragically Hip. I have grown up listening to the Hip and have been a guest DJ, with my dad, on the radio a number of times. One song that we always ask to play is Poets because I love its lyrics. Being from Kingston, we see members of the Hip walking around the city- which is very cool. But more than that they are really Canada's band. When Gord announced that he had brain cancer, I decided to add a portrait of him to a collection that I am working on called, "Great Canadians." I finished the painting the day after I saw the Hip play their last show in Kingston, changing Gord's shirt to the JAWS image that he wore that night. It was an emotional night and one that I will always remember. I wish the best to Gord and his family.
