The Last Cast
The Last Cast
The Last Cast is a painting of a small harbor in the Maritimes provinces. One of the most interesting parts for me to create was the “sun,” which appears in the upper right of the painting. This was actually a spin painting that I made using an old-fashioned record player and a vintage vinyl record. The sun also has been enhanced with some gold foil. The central part of the painting is a line that has been cast into the water. I wanted people who are looking at the painting to feel that they are experiencing the joy fishing at the same time as those who are on the boats in the picture. To get this feeling, I actually “cast the paint” and had it land on the canvas, much in the way that a hook lands in the water. So the line is actually being cast from outside the painting, giving the painting more of an “action” feel to it. Because the painting was done over Christmas, the painting was also inspired by the Biblical concept of the Miraculous Draught of Fish. By giving the feeling that the line was coming from outside the painting, I also wanted to convey the idea of spirituality and that there is always something outside of our own world influencing it.
