Waiting for the Great Pumpkin

This is the largest painting that I have created as it’s base is 72 inches. I painted this piece from start to finish for a documentary called “An Artist’s Journey.” One of my favourite celebrations is Halloween and I usually make a very elaborate stage production outside of my house to greet children who visit our place - sometimes planning and starting firing up my jigsaw and circular saws months in advance. To me the pumpkin is the symbol of fall, festive times, the harvest and most importantly Halloween! To create this piece, I carved a stencil of a pumpkin, which is the central element of the painting. I also had lots of fun with the sky and used a repeating linear pattern to it. As you can see from the documentary, part of the way that I view a painting is as a mathematical equation with geometric patterns. I called this painting “Waiting for the Great Pumpkin,” because I always loved watching Charlie Brown movies during festive times and because historically the presence of pumpkins signifies the importance of the harvest for man.
